Love With Everything2 Corinthians 8:12

Accepted According to What a Man Hath

This message is for A man who measures everything he offers God against what other people offer needs the clause that fixes the standard to what he actually has.

He does the comparison automatically now and he has stopped noticing that he is doing it.

Somebody prays out loud and part of him is assessing the prayer against what he would have said. Somebody gives and he knows, roughly, what he gave. Somebody talks about their reading and he runs his own against it inside about a second and a half.

He is not competitive in any other area of his life. He is genuinely pleased when other people do well at work and he has never once envied a house.

But in the one area that matters most to him, there is a permanent running total, and he is always somewhere in the lower half of it.

And the result is not that he tries harder. The result is that he has begun to withhold. He does not pray out loud any more. He gives without saying. He has, over about nine years, quietly stepped back from anything where his offering would be visible next to somebody else's.

Here is the sentence he has never said out loud.

He is not sure whether God receives anything from him at all, or whether what he brings is simply the small end of a range.

Accepted According to What a Man Hath

Read what the standard is fixed to

There is a clause in the second letter to Corinth about giving, and the standard it names is very precise.

For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not.2 Corinthians 8:12

Accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not.

Read what the measure is fixed to. Not the amount. Not the average in the room. Not what the most generous person in the congregation managed. What a man hath, which is a different figure for every single person and is nobody's business but his and God's.

And read the condition that comes first: if there be first a willing mind. That is the qualifier, and it is about disposition rather than size, and it is placed before the sentence about acceptance so nobody can miss the order.

And then the second half, which nobody quotes: not according to that he hath not. God explicitly rules out being measured by what you do not have. He puts it in writing, negatively, so it cannot be smuggled back in.

Your offering is measured against what you have rather than against the room, and 2 Corinthians 8:12 rules out the other measure in the same sentence. That is what the word actually fixes, not a consolation I am offering, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes a running total out of a man's head.

Comparison always produces withholding

Now the plain thing, and it is about what the nine years have done rather than what they say about you.

Comparison does not produce effort. People believe it does, and it does briefly, and then it produces exactly what has happened to you: withdrawal from anything visible.

That is not cowardice. It is the rational response to an unwinnable measurement. If everything you offer is going to be scored against the best offering in the room, the only sane move is to stop offering where it can be seen, and you made that move, sensibly, over about nine years.

And the cost is specific. The room has lost the prayers of a thoughtful man, and you have lost the experience of putting something down in front of people and having it received.

And nothing about being in the lower half has ever affected how you are received. Scripture fixes the measure to what a man has and rules out what he has not, and the Holy Spirit is not scoring anybody against the best offering in the room.

Give it without adjusting it

Here is the practical piece, and the instruction is about the adjustment rather than the amount.

Give what you actually have this week, and do not adjust it for how it will look.

That means both directions. Do not inflate it so it stands up next to somebody else's, and do not shrink it so that it cannot be compared at all, which is the move you've been making for nine years and which is also an adjustment.

Pray out loud once. A short prayer, the one you would actually pray. Do not lengthen it and do not skip your turn.

Because the adjustment is where the whole disease lives. The offering was never the problem. The editing of it against a standard God has explicitly ruled out is the problem.

You are able to bring it unadjusted this week, and the room was never the measure. 2 Corinthians 8:12 says accepted according to that a man hath and not according to that he hath not, and the Holy Spirit is the One who steadies a man praying his own short prayer out loud.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is this week, in a room with people in it.

Put it down unedited.

Not because comparison is a small sin. It has taken nine years off a thoughtful man's public life and it did it quietly and nobody noticed, including you until recently.

Put it down because the verse fixes the standard to what you have and then goes out of its way to rule out the other one, and because a man who never offers anything visible eventually stops being sure he offers anything at all.

You are able to give this unmeasured today, and the standard was fixed to you rather than to the room. 2 Corinthians 8:12 names what a man hath as the measure and denies the other in the same breath, and the Holy Spirit is with a man who has been silent for nine years.

Now the honest half. Nothing here promises the comparison stops running, and it will probably start up again the moment somebody prays well after you, and that is ordinary and not a relapse. However He answers, the outcome is His and not ours to sell, and nine quiet years are never evidence against you. What is settled is what the measure is fixed to.

Nine years of a running total. Go and put something down unedited.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud. The standing to speak them is yours because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority is not your own: it is His, delegated and carried in His Name, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes the word live in a thoughtful man's mouth. However He answers, and however it sounds beside anybody else, the outcome is His, and nine silent years are never evidence against you.

  1. Comparison I run against everybody in that room, you are a measure and it is not the one in the verse. 2 Corinthians 8:12 fixes acceptance to what a man hath and denies what he hath not in the same sentence. You are not humility, and you are a total that runs without being asked.
  2. Habit of withholding anything that could be seen, get out in the name of Jesus. You have taken nine years of a thoughtful man's prayers out of the room, and God has never once scored anybody against the best offering present. The willing mind is the qualifier, and it comes first.
  3. Lord, if there be first a willing mind it is accepted according to that a man hath. Scripture rules out the other measure explicitly so it cannot be smuggled back in, and the Holy Spirit is with me when my turn comes this week. I am praying the short true thing out loud, and I am not adjusting it in either direction.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
