Was That YouIsaiah 42:16

I Will Lead Them in Paths They Have Not Known

This message is for A man who will not take a step until he is shown the whole route needs to see the promise that is made specifically to people who cannot see it.

He is not a coward and I want that established before anything else.

He has moved country once with two suitcases. He has started a business from nothing and closed it properly when it did not work, and paid everybody. He is the man his family calls at two in the morning, and he goes.

But there is something in front of him now, and he has been sitting on it for fourteen months, and the reason is very precise.

He cannot see step four.

He can see step one. He can more or less see step two. Step three is a guess. And step four is complete darkness, and until step four is visible he will not take step one, because he has decided that moving without the whole route is presumption rather than faith.

He would put it more respectably than that. He would say he is waiting on the Lord for clarity, and there is a version of him that is genuinely doing that, and I am not going to be cynical about a man who prays.

Here is the sentence he has never said out loud.

He has been asking God for something God has not offered anybody, and then reading the absence of it as an instruction to stay still.

I Will Lead Them in Paths They Have Not Known

Read who the promise is made to

There is a verse in Isaiah that is not addressed to people who can see the road. It is addressed specifically to people who cannot.

And I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them.Isaiah 42:16

In paths that they have not known.

Read what is promised and what is not. He does not promise to show them the way and then send them down it. He promises to bring them, along a road they do not know, while it is still dark.

I will make darkness light before them. Before them. Not before they start. The light arrives in front of a person who is walking, which means the walking begins in the dark, which means the dark was never the signal to stop.

Your route is His to reveal as you go rather than yours to see in advance, and Isaiah 42:16 promises the leading through paths that are not known. That is what the word actually offers, not a comfort I am inventing, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes darkness light in front of a man already moving.

The condition was yours, not His

Now the plain thing, and I say it as a friend who would not say it if it were not true.

Fourteen months ago you set a condition. You did it quietly and probably without noticing: I will move when I can see step four. Then you took the silence about step four as God declining to release you.

But He never agreed to that condition. It is not in anything He said. What He said, repeatedly, to Abraham and to the whole nation in a wilderness and to the men in the boats, was a single next thing, and the next thing after that came later.

And this is not a rebuke about faith. It is about who set the terms. You have been waiting on a message He never undertook to send.

And nothing about the darkness ahead has ever meant He is holding you back. Scripture has Him leading people down roads they had not known and lighting them as they went, and the Holy Spirit is not withholding a map He never promised.

Take the step you can see

Here is the practical piece, and it is deliberately unimpressive.

Take step one. This week. Before step four is visible.

Not the whole thing. Not a leap. The single next action that is already clear to you, the one you could describe to me right now in a sentence if I asked, and which you've not done because it feels premature.

And I am not handing you a rule that says movement is always right and waiting is always faithless. Sometimes waiting is exactly the instruction, and I am not going to give you a formula that removes the need to weigh this, because no such formula exists. What I am telling you is that I cannot see the end is not the same thing as He has said no, and you have been treating them as identical for fourteen months.

You are able to move on step one in the dark, and the seeing was never the condition of the going. He promised to bring the blind by a way they knew not, and the Holy Spirit is with a man who takes the one step he can already describe.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is this week, fourteen months in.

Move on what is lit.

This was never cowardice, and nobody who knows you would call it that. It was a reasonable man applying a reasonable standard that God did not set, and getting quieter and quieter as the months went by, and beginning to wonder whether the silence meant something about him.

You are able to take the next step today, and the missing map was never a refusal. Isaiah 42:16 puts the leading and the lighting on Him and the walking on you, and the Holy Spirit is doing that in a man who has been still for fourteen months.

Now the honest half. Nothing here promises step four becomes visible after step one, and it may not, and step two may be as far as you get for a while. However He answers, the outcome is His and not ours to sell, and fourteen careful months are never evidence against you. What is settled is that the road is lit as you go.

Fourteen months and a step you could describe in a sentence. Go and take it.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud. The standing to speak them is yours because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority is not your own: it is His, delegated and carried in His Name, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes the word live in a careful man's mouth. However He answers, and whether or not the rest of the road appears, the outcome is His, and fourteen months of waiting are never evidence against you.

  1. Demand for the whole route before I move, you are a condition I set and God never agreed to it. Isaiah 42:16 promises to lead the blind in paths they have not known and to make darkness light before them. You are not caution, and you are terms I wrote and then waited on.
  2. Reading of the silence that says He is holding me back, get out in the name of Jesus. You have had fourteen months of a good man standing still in the middle of a road, and God has never once promised anybody the whole mountain at once. He gives the next sixty meters.
  3. Lord, You bring the blind by a way they knew not and You make the darkness light before them. Scripture puts the leading and the lighting on You and only the walking on me, and the Holy Spirit is with me on the step I can already see. I am taking step one this week, in the dark.
