She has been running an examination on herself for about three years and she is very tired.
The subject of the examination is her own interior. Something rises while she is praying, and immediately a second process begins, which is the assessment: is this the Spirit, or is this me? Is this peace, or is this relief? Is this conviction, or is this my temperament, which has always leaned this way?
She is good at introspection, which is exactly the problem, because a good introspector can construct a plausible case for either verdict in about forty seconds, and she does, and then she reverses it.
She has read about the witness of the Spirit. She has heard people describe an inner assurance as though it were a fact about their day, and she has looked for it, and what she finds instead is weather.
Here is the sentence she has never said out loud.
She thinks that if the witness were real in her, she would not have to look for it this hard.

Read what the witness is about
There is a verse everybody uses for inner assurance in general, and it is not general at all. It has one subject.
The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.Romans 8:16
That we are the children of God.
That is the content of the witness. Not which job. Not whether the impression on Tuesday was Him. Not a running commentary on your decisions. The witness Paul names is about who you belong to, and it is fixed on that one thing.
And look at the direction of the sentence. The Spirit bears witness with your spirit. It is not an internal event you have to detect and grade. It is testimony given alongside you about your standing, which is a fact outside your feelings and does not move when they do.
Your standing is testified to rather than sensed by you, and Romans 8:16 makes the children of God the entire content of that witness. That is what the word actually assigns it, not a narrowing I am imposing, and the Holy Spirit is the One who bears that witness in a woman who cannot feel a thing.
The examination was set on the wrong paper
Now the plain thing, and I want to say it kindly because three years is a long time.
You've been trying to use a verse about adoption as an instrument for grading impressions, and it was never built for that, and so it has failed you the way a ruler fails when you try to weigh something with it.
That failure is not a verdict on your spiritual life. It is a category mistake, and a common one, and it has been sold to you by people who were themselves handed it.
And notice what the examination has cost. Every genuine movement in you now arrives with an inspector attached, and there is nothing in the world that survives being watched that closely, including good things, including sleep.
And nothing about the weather in you has ever altered whose you are. Scripture puts the witness on your sonship rather than on your sensations, and the Holy Spirit is not withdrawing from a woman who feels flat.
Say the fact in the flattest hour
Here is the practical piece, and it deliberately goes against the grain.
Say it out loud when you feel nothing.
Pick the flattest moment of your week. Not a good moment. The tired Wednesday, the middle of a shift, the ten minutes when the flat is gray and you feel like a machine. And say, out loud: I am a child of God.
Then do not check how it landed. That is the whole discipline. Do not run the assessment afterwards to see whether it felt true, because the checking is the three year habit and it is what turned a fact into a mood.
I am not giving you a method for grading impressions, and I am not going to, because no such method exists that survives a hard week. What is on offer is a fixed fact, testified to, and a God who steers people who stand on it.
You are able to stand on this while feeling nothing, and the feeling was never the evidence. Romans 8:16 says the Spirit bears witness that we are the children of God, and the Holy Spirit is testifying to that on a gray Wednesday afternoon.
So here is the turn, and it is this week, in the flattest hour of your week.
Put the paper down.
Not because introspection is wicked. It is not, and you will not stop being a person who notices her own interior, and I would not want you to. Put it down because you've been grading a subject that was never on the paper, and three years of that would exhaust anybody, and it has.
You are able to rest on the witness today, and the witness was never about your impressions. Romans 8:16 puts it squarely on your being a child of God, and the Holy Spirit is bearing that witness in a woman too tired to detect anything.
Now the honest half. Nothing here promises the flatness lifts this week, or that you will start feeling assurance as a sensation, and some people rarely do. However He answers, the outcome is His and not ours to sell, and three gray years are never evidence against you. What is settled is what the witness is about.
Three years of grading yourself. Go and put it down.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud. The standing to speak them is yours because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority is not your own: it is His, delegated and carried in His Name, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes the word live in a tired woman's mouth. However He answers, and whether or not anything feels different this week, the outcome is His, and three flat years are never evidence against you.
- Project of grading my own feelings, you are exhausting and you are not what the verse describes. Romans 8:16 gives the witness one subject, and that subject is that I am a child of God. You are not discernment, and you are an inspector I attached to everything.
- Idea that a real witness would be easier to detect, get out in the name of Jesus. You have had three years of a good woman testing herself in the dark, and God has never once made a fact depend on the weather inside somebody. The witness is borne with my spirit, not found by it.
- Lord, the Spirit Himself bears witness with my spirit that I am a child of God. Scripture puts that on my standing rather than on my sensations, and the Holy Spirit is testifying to it on a gray Wednesday. I am saying it out loud in the flattest hour of my week, and I am not checking how it landed.
