Be Ye Doers and Not Hearers Only

This message is for A man with eleven years of notes and no obedience needs to see that intake has been standing in for action, without being shamed for the years.

He has eleven years of notebooks and he can lay a hand on any of them.

They are dated. They are indexed at the front. There are entries from conferences, from sermons, from long mornings with the book open, and a good number of them are marked in the margin with a small circle, which is his own code for this is for me.

He has counted the circles once. There are quite a lot of them.

He is not a hypocrite and I am not going to write him as one. He genuinely loves this. The reading is not performance and the notes are not for show, and he has never once posted a photograph of an open Bible.

But there is a thing about the circles.

He can tell you what each one was about. He can tell you the date, and often the room. What he cannot tell you, about most of them, is what he did afterwards.

Here is the sentence he has never said out loud.

The taking in has become the whole of it, and somewhere in the last decade the taking in started to feel like the obeying.

Be Ye Doers and Not Hearers Only

Read what he calls the alternative

There is a line in James, and the second half of it is sharper than the first.

But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.James 1:22

Deceiving your own selves.

That is the mechanism, and it is the kindest possible diagnosis, because a deception is something happening to somebody rather than a charge against them. He does not say hypocrites. He does not say frauds. He says people who have got themselves mixed up about what they are doing.

And notice what the deception is. It is not a matter of thinking oneself good. It is a much subtler swap, where the experience of receiving something true produces the same interior satisfaction as having acted on it, and the satisfaction closes the loop, and the thing never gets done.

Eleven years of that is not eleven years of pretending. It is eleven years of a loop closing in the wrong place.

Your hearing was always meant to arrive at doing rather than end in itself, and James 1:22 names the gap as self-deception rather than fraud. That is what the word actually calls it, not an accusation I am making, and the Holy Spirit is the One who shows a man the swap without condemning the years.

No reckoning is coming

Now the plain thing, and I want to be very clear because this category gets preached badly.

There is no audit here. I am not going to walk you back through the circles one by one and ask what you did about each, and any preacher who does that to you is producing shame, and shame has never once produced obedience. It produces more listening, because listening feels like doing something.

The years are not being taken off you. Much of what you took in has shaped you in ways you cannot see from inside, and God has not been sitting there tallying.

What is on offer is a step. Not a reckoning. One thing.

And nothing about eleven years has ever put you behind with Him. Scripture calls the gap a deception rather than a debt, and the Holy Spirit is not standing over a man's notebooks with an account.

The oldest one, in its smallest version

Here is the practical piece, and it has two halves that matter equally.

Take the oldest undone thing. Not the newest, not the biggest, not the most impressive. The oldest, because it is the one that has been quietly teaching you that circles do not have to be actioned.

Then do the smallest version of it that still genuinely counts.

If it is a conversation, it is one sentence sent, not a summit. If it is money, it is the first amount, not the whole plan. If it is a person to visit, it is a visit of twenty minutes.

The smallest version is not a compromise. It is the thing that breaks the loop, because a loop broken once is a loop that can be broken again, and the size of the first break has never mattered.

You are able to do one thing this week, and the doing is what the hearing was always for. James 1:22 says be doers and not hearers only, and the Holy Spirit is the One who moves a man from a page to a door.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is this week, in the smallest version.

Go and fix the gate.

Not because the eleven years were wasted, because they were not, and not because you have been playing at something, because you have not. Go because one circle turning into one action this week will do more in you than the next conference will, and because you already know which circle it is.

You are able to break the loop today, and the years behind you were never a bill. James 1:22 puts the doing at the end of the hearing and calls the gap a deception rather than a debt, and the Holy Spirit is moving in a man with eleven years of notebooks.

Now the honest half. Nothing here promises that doing the oldest thing makes it go well, or that the person receives it, and one of these may cost you something. However He answers, the outcome is His and not ours to sell, and eleven years of listening are never evidence against you. What is settled is where hearing was going.

Eleven years and a lot of circles. Go and do the oldest one.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud. The standing to speak them is yours because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority is not your own: it is His, delegated and carried in His Name, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes the word live in a studious man's mouth. However He answers, and however the doing turns out, the outcome is His, and eleven years of notes are never evidence against you.

  1. Habit of taking in more instead of doing one, you are a substitution and you are not devotion. James 1:22 says be doers of the word and not hearers only, and calls the gap a deception rather than a crime. You are not hunger, and you are a loop closing in the wrong place.
  2. Shame that would have me audit eleven years, get out in the name of Jesus. You have never produced one act of obedience in anybody, and God has never once stood over a man's notebooks with an account. What is offered here is a step.
  3. Lord, You said be ye doers of the word and not hearers only. Scripture puts the doing at the end of the hearing and never sends a bill for the years, and the Holy Spirit is moving me from the page to the door. I am doing the oldest one this week, in its smallest true version.
