She was twenty six when it came, and she is fifty three now, and the arithmetic is the first thing she does whenever it surfaces.
Twenty seven years.
What came was clear and she has never pretended otherwise. It involved leaving a place and going to a harder one, and she said no. Not dramatically. She stayed, she married, she raised two, she has served in the same congregation for two decades and served well, and she is not going to sit here and call that a wasted life because it was not.
But she has never once gone back to Him about it.
Not out of rebellion. Out of a settled conviction that has had twenty seven years to harden: that the thing was offered once, that she declined, and that a person does not get to reopen a matter like that. Somebody else was given it. The world turned. You do not go back to a door you walked away from and knock.
Here is the sentence she has never said out loud.
She thinks she is living in the second-best version of her life, and that she chose it herself, and that God has been gracious about it in the way people are gracious about something they will not mention.
Read the first sentence of chapter three
There is a sentence in Jonah that is one of the plainest things in the book, and it is easy to read past because we are all waiting for the fish.
And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time, saying, Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.Jonah 3:1-2
The second time.
Sit with who that came to. Not a man who hesitated. Not a man who asked for more clarity. A man who heard it perfectly well, went to a port, bought a ticket, and sailed in the exact opposite direction with intent.
And the second word is not a lesser word. Read it again. It is the same commission, in the same terms, to the same city. It has not been downgraded, and there is no clause in it about his record, and God does not spend a single line on what happened in between.
Your word can arrive a second time rather than expiring on refusal, and Jonah 3:1 records exactly that happening to the man who ran hardest. That is what the word actually reports, not encouragement I am offering, and the Holy Spirit is the One who brings a thing back round to a woman of fifty three.
Twenty seven years was never a lock
Now the plain thing, and I want it said carefully because your life has been good and I am not undoing it.
The years were not a punishment and they were not a detour. Two children, two decades of service, a marriage. God has been in all of it, and I will not have you hearing that those years were a holding pen. That is not what this is.
What I am undoing is one belief, and it is this: that the door closed because you did not walk through it. That is not written anywhere. It is a rule you built out of how the world handles offers, and God does not run His callings the way a hiring committee does.
And notice what the rule cost. It did not stop you serving. It stopped you asking, for twenty seven years, about the one subject you most wanted to raise.
And nothing about a no at twenty six has ever ended the conversation. Scripture has the word coming a second time in the same terms to a man who had sailed the other way, and the Holy Spirit is not observing a closing date on a woman's life.
Ask about it again, in words
Here is the practical piece, and it is one conversation.
Say it out loud to Him. The whole thing. What it was, that you said no, and that you've not raised it since.
Then ask. Not for a repeat of the thing given at twenty six, because twenty six is a long way behind you and the thing itself may look completely different now. Ask whether there is anything of it still standing, and mean the question.
And here is what I am not doing. I am not telling you the second word is coming, or that it will be the same, or that a fifty three year old woman with two children and a life in a congregation is about to be sent anywhere. I do not know, and anybody who tells you they do is inventing a word on your behalf, and that is the one thing we do not do here.
What I know is that you have not asked, and that the reason you have not asked is a rule that is not in the book.
You are able to raise this with Him again today, and the raising was never presumptuous. Jonah 3:1 has the word coming a second time to a man who ran, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes an old subject sayable on a porch at fifty three.
So here is the turn, and it is this morning, on the porch.
Raise it.
Not to reclaim 1999. That version is gone and you do not want it back, and if it were handed to you now you would not take it, and you know that. Raise it because a whole subject has been sealed off between you and God by a rule He never made, and twenty seven years is a long time to be careful about one topic with somebody you talk to every day.
You are able to open this subject again today, and the closing was never His doing. Scripture puts a second word in the same terms into the hands of a man who fled, and the Holy Spirit is with a woman of fifty three saying an old thing out loud.
Now the honest half. Nothing here promises a second word comes, or that anything at all changes this year, and it may be that what you get is simply the freedom to have asked. However He answers, the outcome is His and not ours to sell, and twenty seven years of not asking are never evidence against you. What is settled is that no expiry was ever published.
Twenty seven years and one sealed subject. Go and raise it.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud on the porch. The standing to speak them is yours because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority is not your own: it is His, delegated and carried in His Name, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes the word live in an ordinary woman's mouth. However He answers, and whether or not anything comes of the asking, the outcome is His, and one no at twenty six is never evidence against you.
- Belief that I used up my chance in that year, you are an expiry and it is not written anywhere. Jonah 3:1 has the word of the Lord coming a second time, in the same terms, to a man who had bought a ticket the other way. You are not humility, and you are a rule I made out of how the world runs.
- Silence I have kept on this one subject for twenty seven years, get out in the name of Jesus. You have kept a faithful woman from raising the thing she most wanted to raise, and God has never once published a closing date on anybody. He does not run His callings like a hiring committee.
- Lord, the word came unto Jonah the second time and Scripture spends no line at all on what he had done in between. That is written down where anybody can hold it, and the Holy Spirit is with me on this porch while I say an old thing out loud. I am asking You about it again today, and I am waiting without filling the quiet.
