He Prayed for His Friends

There were three of them and it was six years ago and he can still name the meeting.

He is not going to rehearse the details here, and he does not need to, because everybody has a version of this. What matters is that it was not imagined, it was not a misunderstanding, and two other people who were there have since told him privately that it was handled badly.

He lost the thing he had built. He lost a position. He lost, for about two years, the ability to walk into a room without checking who was in it.

He has done the correct things. He did not retaliate. He did not run a campaign. He has been civil at three funerals.

But he cannot pray for them.

He has tried, twice, and both times something came up in him so fast and so hot that he stopped, and both times he felt worse afterwards rather than better, and he has quietly concluded that this is simply a locked room in him and that God will have to work around it.

Here is the sentence he has never said out loud.

He suspects that praying for them would mean saying that what they did was acceptable, and he is not able to say that, because it was not.

Read where the turn is placed

There is a sentence near the end of Job, and the placement of it is the whole point.

And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before.Job 42:10

When he prayed for his friends.

Sit with who those friends were. These are the men who sat with him for a week in silence, which was the best thing anybody did for him, and then spent thirty five chapters explaining that his children died because of something he must have done.

God does not minimize what they did, either. Two verses earlier He tells them plainly that they have not spoken of Him what is right, and He requires an offering from them. The wrong is named, out loud, by God, before Job prays.

So this is not a passage about pretending the friends were fine. The wrong is on the record, and the turn is still placed at the praying.

Your release is placed at the praying rather than at the pretending, and Job 42:10 puts God's own verdict on the friends two verses before it. That is what the word actually arranges, not a demand I am making of you, and the Holy Spirit is the One who opens a locked room in a man who was genuinely wronged.

Nobody is asking you to say it was acceptable

Now the plain thing, and it is the one that has been blocking you for six years.

Praying for a man is not a statement about his conduct. You've assumed it is, and that assumption is why every attempt has felt like a betrayal of yourself, and your instinct to refuse a lie is not a fault in you, it is the best thing about you.

God said what those three men had done was wrong. He said it first. And then Job prayed, and the praying was not a retraction of God's verdict, because both things are in the same chapter and neither cancels the other.

The wrong stands. And you can pray.

And nothing about six years of being unable has ever made you bitter beyond His reach. Scripture names the friends' fault out loud and still puts the turning at the praying, and the Holy Spirit is not asking you to call a wrong thing acceptable.

One sentence, out loud, with a name

Here is the practical piece, and it is deliberately tiny because you've twice tried something large and been burned.

One sentence. Out loud. Using one man's actual name.

Not all three. Not a paragraph. Not a prayer that requires you to feel anything you do not feel, because a prayer built on manufactured warmth will fall over inside a week and you will conclude the room is locked for good.

Something you can honestly say. God, this is about Michael. I am asking You to deal well with him, and I am not able to say more than that today.

That is enough. That is a real prayer, and it is honest, and honest is the only kind that survives six years of this.

You are able to say one true sentence this week, and the size of it was never the point. Job 42:10 puts the turning at the praying and never at the feeling, and the Holy Spirit is the One who carries a short hard sentence out of a man's mouth on a farm track.
