Peradventure Ten Shall Be Found

He is a careful man and he prays like a man writing to somebody important.

He states the matter. He states it accurately. He does not exaggerate the need and he does not repeat himself, and then he stops, because to say it again would imply that it had not been heard the first time, and he would not do that to a person and he will not do it to God.

He would tell you this is reverence. Some of it is.

But he has a cousin in a bad situation, and he has mentioned it to God once, properly, three months ago, and he has not gone back to it since, and something in him is straining at the seams about that.

Because he does not feel finished. He feels like a man who has said a thing once in a room and then stood there with his hands behind his back while the situation went on getting worse.

Here is the sentence he has never said out loud.

He thinks that going back a second time would be pushing his luck, and he half suspects the whole framework is a way of protecting himself from finding out whether God would say no.

Count the rounds

There is a conversation in Genesis that people summarize politely and rarely count.

And he said, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten's sake.Genesis 18:32

I will speak yet but this once.

That is the sixth time. Count them: fifty, forty five, forty, thirty, twenty, ten. Six rounds, each one pressing further than the last, each one a man haggling downward with God about a city he does not live in.

And read what God does at every single stage. He agrees. He does not rebuke him, He does not remark on his persistence, and He does not once suggest that Abraham has had his turn.

The only anxiety in that passage belongs to Abraham. Let not the Lord be angry. The Lord is not angry. That is Abraham's projection, written into the text so we can watch it not be true.

Your going back is permitted rather than presumptuous, and Genesis 18:32 records six rounds and no rebuke at any of them. That is what the word actually shows, not a license I am inventing, and the Holy Spirit is the One who moves a careful man past his own manners.

Your reverence is imported

Now the plain thing, and it is about where your framework came from.

The rule you follow is a rule about important people. Do not repeat yourself. Do not imply they missed it. Say it once, well, and wait. It is a good rule in the world it comes from, and you learned it somewhere and it has served you.

It is not from Scripture. Scripture's picture of intercession is a man at a threshold going six rounds, a widow wearing down a judge who is explicitly said to be nothing like God, and a friend banging on a door at midnight for bread.

Every one of those is behavior that would be embarrassing in front of an important man, and every one is used approvingly.

And nothing about asking again has ever tried His patience. Scripture gives the persistent widow and the friend at midnight as pictures rather than warnings, and the Holy Spirit is not standing on ceremony with a man about his own cousin.

Go back this week, twice

Here is the practical piece, and it has a number in it on purpose.

Go back a second time this week. Then a third.

Not because repetition is a mechanism. It is not, and I am not selling you a formula in which the fourth ask unlocks something the third did not, because that would be superstition and you would see through it in a week.

Go back because it is not finished, and because that unfinished feeling is information rather than a fault. Something in you is still holding your cousin up, and you've been refusing to let it speak on the grounds of an etiquette God has never once required.

And notice what Abraham was doing. He was not informing God. He was staying in the conversation. That is what those six rounds are.

You are able to come back as many times as it takes, and the coming back was never impertinence. Genesis 18:32 has a man pressing six times about a city with an agreement at every stage, and the Holy Spirit is the One who keeps a careful man in the conversation.
