Hearing For OthersLuke 22:32

I Have Prayed That Thy Faith Fail Not

This message is for A mother praying vaguely and frantically for a son in a hard season needs the precise thing Jesus prayed for Peter, which was not that the trouble be canceled.

Her son is twenty seven and he is in the middle of something, and she prays for him constantly and has no idea what she is asking.

That is not false modesty. If you stopped her at eleven at night, in the kitchen, mid prayer, and asked her what specifically she had just requested, she could not tell you.

What comes out is a kind of continuous pressure. His name, over and over. Please. Not this. Keep him. Please.

She would call it fervent, and it is, and it is also mostly fear with a religious surface on it, and she knows that and it makes her feel worse.

And underneath it is a request she does not say plainly, which is that God would remove the whole situation, immediately, and return him to how he was at twenty two.

Here is the sentence she has never said out loud.

She is frightened that if this goes on much longer, whatever he had of God will simply not survive it, and she does not know how to ask for anything except that it stop.

I Have Prayed That Thy Faith Fail Not

Read exactly what He asked for

There is a sentence in Luke where Jesus tells a man what He has prayed for him, and the precision of it is remarkable.

But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.Luke 22:32

That thy faith fail not.

Read what He does not pray. He has just said that Satan has asked to have Peter and to sift him like wheat, and He does not pray that the sifting be canceled. He does not ask that the night be different. He does not ask that Peter not fail, and Peter fails spectacularly within hours.

He prays for one thing, precisely: that underneath the failing, the faith itself will not give way.

And then look at the second half, which is the part almost nobody notices. When thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. He is already speaking about what this man will be doing on the other side of it, in the same breath, as a settled fact.

Your asking can be precise rather than shapeless, and Luke 22:32 shows Him praying that the faith hold rather than that the trouble be canceled. That is what the word actually records Him asking, not a technique I am supplying, and the Holy Spirit is the One who teaches a frightened mother what to say at eleven at night.

Fear has been doing your praying

Now the plain thing, and I say it as somebody who is not going to scold you for being afraid for your own child.

What has been happening in that kitchen is that fear has taken over the machinery. The volume is high, the frequency is high, and the content is almost entirely make it stop, and none of that is wicked, it is what love does when it has no shape to pour itself into.

But it has cost you two things. It has exhausted you, because unshaped prayer has no place to rest. And it has kept you from ever asking for the thing you most actually want, which is not that his twenties be smoother. It is that whatever is underneath in him holds.

And nothing about praying in fear has ever made your prayers worthless. Scripture shows Christ Himself interceding in the hours before a disaster He did not prevent, and the Holy Spirit is not grading a mother on her composure.

One sentence, and pray it daily

Here is the practical piece, and it will feel far too small.

Choose one sentence. Pray it every day, unchanged, for a month.

Father, whatever this costs him, let the faith underneath not give way, and keep him for what lies on the other side of it.

Or your own version. But one, and specific, and the same one, because repeating a shaped prayer does something a hundred shapeless ones cannot: it gives your fear somewhere to go that is not the kitchen floor.

And I am not telling you what God will do with your son. I do not know, and nobody who claims to know is doing you any good, and manufacturing a promise about another person's life is the one thing I will not do here.

You are able to pray one exact thing this week, and the exactness was never coldness. Luke 22:32 has Him praying that the faith fail not while the sifting was already granted, and the Holy Spirit is the One who shapes a mother's fear into a sentence she can carry.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is tonight, in the kitchen.

Ask for one thing.

Not because your fear is shameful. It is not, and a mother who was not frightened in this situation would not be a better mother, she would be a stranger.

Ask for one thing because the pressure has been running in a circle for a long time, and because underneath all of it there is a request you have never once made plainly, which is exactly the request Christ made for a man He knew was about to fall.

You are able to pray with precision tonight, and the precision was never a smaller love. Luke 22:32 has Him asking that the faith hold rather than that the night be canceled, and the Holy Spirit is with a mother at eleven at night in her own kitchen.

Now the honest half. Nothing here promises the situation shortens, or that your son comes through it the way you picture, and it may go on and it may get harder. However He answers, the outcome is His and not ours to sell, and years of frightened praying are never evidence against you. What is settled is what can actually be asked.

Years of pressure and no shape. Go and choose the sentence.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud. The standing to speak them is yours because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority is not your own: it is His, delegated and carried in His Name, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes the word live in a mother's mouth. However He answers, the outcome is His and not ours to sell. These lines are spoken over yourself and never over your son, because his road is his own and no word of mine is laid across another person's will.

  1. Panic that has been doing my praying for me, you are noise and you are not intercession. Luke 22:32 has Christ asking one exact thing while the sifting was already granted. You are not love, and you are fear with a religious surface on it.
  2. Idea that a precise prayer is a smaller prayer, get out in the name of Jesus. You have kept a mother from ever asking plainly for the thing she most wants, and God has never once graded anybody on composure. He prayed that the faith underneath would not give way.
  3. Lord, You prayed that his faith fail not, and Scripture puts that request in Your own mouth before a night You did not prevent. That is written down where I can hold it, and the Holy Spirit is shaping my fear into something I can say. I am praying one sentence tonight, and the same one tomorrow.
