There was no day when she decided. That is the part she finds difficult.
For about eleven years she prayed for her sister every single day. It was not performative and it was not desperate. It was a fixed point, at the end of everything else, the way you check a door before bed.
Then somewhere in the twelfth or thirteenth year it stopped, and she could not tell you the week.
Nothing dramatic happened. Her sister did not do anything worse than usual. There was no argument and no crisis. The praying just thinned out, the way a path through a field disappears when people stop walking it.
And when she noticed, about a year later, she did something with the noticing that felt mature at the time.
She decided it was honest. She told herself that continuing to ask for a thing after thirteen years of no movement was a kind of pretending, and that God knew what she wanted, and that quietly letting it go was less hypocritical than saying words she no longer had any expectation behind.
Here is the sentence she has never said out loud.
She has not said her sister's name to God in about four years, and she is not sure whether that is peace or whether something died.

Read how Samuel classified it
There is a line in Samuel's farewell speech, and the category he puts intercession in is not the one most people use.
Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way.1 Samuel 12:23
God forbid that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you.
He does not call praying for them an encouragement, a gift, or something he does when he feels moved. He treats stopping as a thing he is not free to do.
And look at who he is saying it to. These are people who have just rejected everything he stood for, asked for a king in his old age, and dismissed forty years of his life's work. If anybody ever had grounds for a dignified withdrawal from intercession, it was Samuel that afternoon.
He rules it out in the strongest words available to him.
Your praying is a duty that outlives results rather than a response to them, and 1 Samuel 12:23 has him refusing to stop for people who had just rejected him. That is what the word actually places it in, not a burden I am adding, and the Holy Spirit is the One who returns a name to a woman's mouth after four years.
What you called honesty was tiredness
Now the plain thing, and it is gentle because thirteen years is a long time to hold something up.
The reasoning you used was good reasoning. It really is more honest to stop saying words with no expectation behind them, and I am not going to tell you that thirteen years of daily asking was insufficient in some way, because it was not, and most people would have stopped at four.
But look at what the reasoning was covering. Tiredness. Thirteen years of asking for one thing and watching nothing happen wears out something in a person, and it should, and there is no shame in it.
Tiredness is a much better explanation than dishonesty, and it does not require you to have failed at anything.
And there is no reckoning for the four years. Nobody is charging you. There is a name that has not been said and a woman who is allowed to say it again.
And nothing about four silent years has ever put you in the wrong with Him. Scripture treats ceasing as the thing to be refused and never once weighs a person's stamina, and the Holy Spirit is not standing over a tired woman with a record of her prayers.
Say the name
Here is the practical piece, and it is one word.
Say her name to God out loud this week.
Not a campaign. Not thirteen more years starting Monday. Not a resolution about daily prayer that will collapse by the fourteenth, because you've made those and they are how a person ends up further away than before.
Her name, out loud, once, and whatever short honest thing goes with it, including I do not know what to ask for her any more, if that is the truth.
Then put her back on whatever list you actually use, and let the frequency be whatever it is.
You are able to say her name again today, and the returning was never a re-application. 1 Samuel 12:23 calls ceasing the thing not to be done and puts no requirement on the fervency, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes a four year silence breakable in an ordinary hall on a Tuesday.
So here is the turn, and it is this week.
Say the name.
Not with fresh expectation manufactured for the occasion. You do not have that and pretending to have it is exactly the thing you rightly refused four years ago.
Say it because ceasing was the one thing Samuel would not do for people who had thrown him over, and because a name unsaid for four years starts to feel unsayable, and that is not peace, whatever it has been calling itself.
You are able to break this silence today, and the tiredness was never a disqualification. 1 Samuel 12:23 refuses the ceasing and says nothing at all about the results, and the Holy Spirit is with a woman saying a name she has not said since 2022.
Now the honest half. Nothing here promises anything changes for your sister, this year or in another thirteen, and I am not going to invent a promise about somebody else's life on your behalf. However He answers, the outcome is His and not ours to sell, and four quiet years are never evidence against you. What is settled is what ceasing was called.
Thirteen years, then four of silence. Go and say the name.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud. The standing to speak them is yours because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority is not your own: it is His, delegated and carried in His Name, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes the word live in a tired woman's mouth. However He answers, the outcome is His and not ours to sell. These lines are spoken over yourself and never over your sister, because her life is her own and no word of mine is laid across another person's will.
- Quiet retirement I took from praying for her, you are not honesty and I am ending you today. 1 Samuel 12:23 has a prophet refusing to cease for people who had just thrown him over. You are not maturity, and you are thirteen years of tiredness wearing a sensible coat.
- Fear that saying her name means starting a thirteen year campaign, get out in the name of Jesus. You have kept a good woman from one sentence in a car, and God has never once measured anybody's stamina before accepting a prayer. Ceasing is the thing that was refused, not faltering.
- Lord, Samuel said God forbid that I should cease to pray for you, and Scripture puts no condition at all on the results. That stands over a name I have not said in four years, and the Holy Spirit is with me while I say it. I am putting her back on the list this week, in ink.
