Was That YouIsaiah 8:20

To the Law and to the Testimony

This message is for A woman carrying a strong impression that quietly contradicts what is written needs to learn that measuring it against the book is permitted rather than faithless.

She has been carrying something for five weeks and she has not told anybody the whole of it.

It arrived during a period of prayer that was, by any measure, real. She was not manufacturing anything. It came with weight and clarity, and it named a specific course of action involving her marriage, and it has not faded, which she has taken as confirmation.

There is one problem, and she has been extremely careful not to look at it directly.

It sits sideways to something written. Not flagrantly. Nothing dramatic. But when she reads a particular passage now, she reads past a couple of verses quickly, and she has noticed herself doing it, and she has decided not to notice.

Here is the sentence she has never said out loud.

She is frightened that if she holds the impression up against the book, she will insult God by implying He might not have said it.

So she has protected the impression from Scripture, in the name of honoring the impression, and she has not seen yet that those two things cannot both be honored at once.

To the Law and to the Testimony

He supplied the measure Himself

There is a line in Isaiah given to people surrounded by voices claiming to speak for God, and it does not tell them to trust their instincts.

To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.Isaiah 8:20

To the law and to the testimony.

Notice who issues that instruction. It is not a skeptic. It is not a committee protecting itself from enthusiasm. It is God, telling His own people to take everything they are hearing and lay it beside what He has already said.

He built the measure and He handed it over, and the handing over is the whole point. A God who did not want to be tested would not have published a standard.

Your checking is His own instruction rather than an insult to Him, and Isaiah 8:20 puts the measure into your hands directly. That is what the word actually commands, not a caution I am adding, and the Holy Spirit is the One who never contradicts what He has already written.

Loyalty to the impression is not loyalty to Him

Now the plain thing, and I will say it gently because you've been carrying this alone for five weeks.

You've started defending the impression from the book. You've noticed yourself reading past verses. That is not reverence, and some part of you already knows it, which is why you've not told anybody the whole of it.

Loyalty to God and loyalty to something you received are not the same loyalty. If the impression is from Him, it will survive contact with what He has said, because He does not work against Himself. If it does not survive, then holding it was never faithfulness. It was attachment, and attachment is human and forgivable and not the same thing.

And nothing about testing this has ever put you outside His approval. Scripture itself commands the comparison and calls the refusal to make it a lack of light, and the Holy Spirit is not offended by a woman who checks.

What checking actually looks like

Here is the practical piece, and it is smaller than you fear.

Write it down. One sentence, the plainest version, no softening language. Impressions resist being written because vagueness is where they survive.

Then read it beside the passage it touches. The whole passage. The two verses you've been reading past.

Then take it to two people who know you and who are not impressed by you, and read both to them. Not for permission. For weight.

I am not giving you a test that guarantees an answer, because no such test exists and anybody offering one is selling something. I am giving you a measure God supplied and people He put around you, and then He steers.

You are able to hold this up to the light, and the measure was given to you by name. Isaiah says to the law and to the testimony, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes a written page speak into a specific five weeks.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is tonight, five weeks in.

Take it to the measure.

Not because I know what it is or what the answer will be. I do not, and I am not going to pretend to. Take it because you have spent five weeks constructing a small protected space where one impression is exempt from the only standard God ever published, and living in that space is costing you more than the answer will.

You are able to test this and remain entirely His, and the testing was commanded rather than tolerated. Scripture hands you the law and the testimony as the measure, and the Holy Spirit is the One who holds a woman steady while she looks.

Now the honest half. Nothing here tells you what you will find, and I am not going to pretend a formula exists that ends all uncertainty, because that would be the very thing this category refuses. However He answers, the outcome is His and not ours to sell, and five careful weeks are never evidence against you. What is settled is that the measure is yours to use.

Five weeks of not looking directly. Go and look.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud. The standing to speak them is yours because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority is not your own: it is His, delegated and carried in His Name, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes the word live in an honest woman's mouth. However He answers, and whatever you find when you look, the outcome is His, and five weeks of carrying it alone are never evidence against you.

  1. Fear that checking a word is an insult to God, you are not reverence and you never were. Isaiah 8:20 sends everything to the law and to the testimony and calls the refusal a lack of light. You are not honor, and you are a place I have been hiding something.
  2. Habit of reading past two verses, get out in the name of Jesus. You have had five weeks of a good woman defending an impression from the only measure God ever published, and He has never once worked against what He has said. If it is His it will survive the light.
  3. Lord, You gave the law and the testimony as the measure and You put it in my own hands. Scripture commands the comparison rather than merely permitting it, and the Holy Spirit is with me while I look at this properly. I am writing it down tonight, and I am reading the whole passage.
