Hear And ObeyJohn 10:27

You Go First

This message is for to move from reading about God to hearing from Him

Eleven sheets of paper go round a folding table in the back room of a garden center café, and they are still warm at the corners, because the printer at home is slow and she left it until late.

The room smells of compost through one wall and coffee through the other. Mismatched chairs. A tray of cups with a chip in the rim of the blue one, which everybody knows is Ruth's. Somebody's cardigan over a chair back. A tin of shortbread that gets opened at question three, every week, without anyone deciding it.

She writes the sheets. Nobody asked her to; she started because the woman before her moved away and the folder was sitting there unclaimed, and now the folder is hers and the questions in it are hers and the little numbers down the left hand side are hers. She types them on a Sunday. She prints them Monday. Twelve years, and she has never once run out of things to ask.

Question four is the one she typed last, and she typed it fast, the way you type a thing you are not going to examine. What has God been saying to you lately?

And they answer her. Ruth talks about her neighbor and a carrier bag of runner beans and how she could not stop thinking about the second bag. Someone at the far end says one sentence and then cries and apologizes for crying, and three hands go out at once. It goes round the table. It is lovely, and it is why she keeps typing them.

Then she looks down at the sheet and says, "Right, question five."

And you move them on. You always move them on. You wrote question five as well, and question six, and you have been writing the questions for so long that it has never once occurred to anybody in that room to ask you one.

You could find any verse in that Bible with your thumb in under four seconds without checking the contents. You have three translations and a concordance with the spine gone. You know what the epistles are for. You know which psalm to give a woman at two in the morning, and you have given it, more than once, and it helped.

And you cannot remember the last time you heard anything.

You Go First

He gave this to sheep

Let me name what you're actually carrying, because it is not doubt and it never has been.

You believe every word on that page. That is precisely what makes the quiet so loud. Someone who had given up would not ache like this; you only ache over something you're certain is real. You're not bored of God. You're hungry, and you've been hungry a long time, and you've kept setting the table for everybody else the whole while.

And somewhere in the twelve years a suspicion moved in and made itself comfortable. Not a doctrine, nothing you would ever say out loud. Just a settled sense that hearing is an advanced thing. A tier. Something for the sort of person who can say I felt the Lord say without their voice going odd on it. And that you, of all people, having read everything there is to read, must have missed whatever it was they were given.

Hear me. That is not what you missed, because it was never a thing handed to some and withheld from others. Look at who Jesus put it in the mouth of.

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.John 10:27

You are one of the sheep that verse describes, and the hearing is named there as ordinary rather than advanced. That is what the word says and not my encouragement, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes a voice recognizable to an ordinary person.

Read what He did not attach to that.

He did not say my gifted sheep. He did not say my sensitive ones, my quiet ones, the ones with the temperament for it, the ones who have done the reading. He said my sheep, and then He qualified it exactly nowhere. And a sheep is the least impressive creature in the whole of Scripture. It has no technique. It cannot study. The entire basis on which a sheep knows a voice is that it has spent its life in the field with the one doing the talking.

Then go back a few verses in that chapter, because the order inside it is the tenderest thing in the passage. He calls His own sheep by name, and He leads them out, and they follow Him because they know His voice. The naming comes first. Before you had any idea what He sounded like, He already knew your name. You've never been standing outside this trying to get a signal. You've been named the entire time.

So hearing is not a rank in this family. It is what belonging sounds like from the inside.

Which means the reading was never the problem. Put that down right now, because you've started to hold it against yourself and it does not deserve that. Every page you've turned is the vocabulary He speaks in. You've not been building a wall for twelve years, you've been laying a floor. What has been missing was never more material. It is the same sentence you already know, arriving addressed.

And notice that Jesus never set an entry price on any of this. When He talked about mountains moving He did not ask for a great faith, or a trained faith, or twelve years of faith. He put the whole thing down at the level of a seed, which is to say at a level you've had all along, and then He did the surprising part. He told them to open their mouths at the mountain. Not to think at it. Not to wait until they felt qualified for it. To speak to it, out loud, the way you would speak to somebody standing in the room.

Your mountain has a shape and it is worth naming: twelve years of quiet certainty that hearing is for other people, and that your place in the arrangement is to be the one who prints the questions.

You have His voice available today rather than reserved for somebody further along. Scripture puts the hearing on the sheep and never on their standing, and the Holy Spirit is not holding it back until you qualify.

The breakthrough

Here is what I want you to see before you speak, and I want you standing up for it.

The ache is not the evidence against you. It is the evidence for you. A longing to hear is the sound a person makes who has already been spoken to and is turning back toward the voice. Dead ears do not ache.

And a quiet season is not a grade. Nobody in this house is going to hand you a reason for it, or tell you what you should have done differently, or suggest that your ears went dull while everybody else's stayed sharp. Silence is not distance. It has never once been evidence that He turned away from you.

You do not have to become a different sort of person first. There is no threshold in front of this. You do not owe Him twelve years of anything before He is willing to speak, and He has never made you earn the right to be spoken to. Hearing comes first here. It always has. What you do with what you hear comes afterwards, and it will be yours to choose, gladly, in your own time and on nobody's clock.

So this once, put the sheet down. Do not lead. Do not facilitate. Do not think of the four women you could pass this on to.

You go first.

You are known by name in John 10:27 and not merely counted, and the knowing comes first in the sentence. He promised that His sheep hear His voice, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes that true in a person who has only ever read about Him.

Declare this over yourself

Now say these out loud, in the room, in your own voice. You're not applying for the right to do this: you're in Christ and Christ is in you, and an ambassador does not audition before he speaks the words of his King. So speak to the mountain rather than about it, and speak to it where it actually lives, which is in a back room with the chairs still out and the folder on the table. What He says after that, and when, and in His own way, is His, and He has never needed a suggestion from either of us. Your part is to stop printing the question and to ask it.

  1. Ears, you were made for a voice and not only for a page, and you're hearing the God who made you. John 10:27 says His sheep hear His voice, so hearing is not a rank I am climbing toward but the ordinary sound of belonging to Him, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes it plain.
  2. Suspicion that hearing is for advanced people, I know exactly what you're: twelve quiet years wearing the coat of a doctrine. In the name of Jesus I hand you back, and I take instead what Christ said out loud in front of everybody, that His own hear His voice and He calls every one of them by name.
  3. Jesus, You knew my name before I ever knew Your voice. These two minutes of quiet are a room where You're already present, and today I sit down here with You. The ear You've been addressing all this time is this one.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
