The Sentence I Said in the Fourth Year

He said it once, out loud, alone, in a kitchen, in the fourth year.

You have forgotten me.

That is all. Five words. And he has never repeated them and he has never told anybody, and he has spent since then quietly apologizing for it in ways he would not describe as apologizing.

He prays a little more carefully now. He is a shade more formal than he used to be. He has noticed, and has never quite admitted, that he no longer says anything to God that he has not first checked.

Because the sentence frightened him. Not because he thought lightning would come. Because he had not known it was in him, and it came out fully formed, in his own voice, in his own kitchen, and it sounded exactly like something a man says when he has stopped believing.

He does not think he has stopped believing. He is a teacher. He knows the arguments. He could take the other side of that sentence for an hour and win.

But he said it, and he meant it in the moment he said it, and for seven years he has carried it as evidence about himself that he has never once shown to anybody.

The sentence is in the book

There is a moment in Isaiah where God quotes what His people have been saying about Him, and He quotes it accurately.

But Zion said, The Lord hath forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten me.Isaiah 49:14

That is your sentence. Very nearly word for word, and it is in the text, on the page, preserved.

And look at what happens next, because it is the whole reason this article exists.

He does not rebuke it. There is no correction of the speaker, no reprimand for saying it, no suggestion that it should not have been said. The reply is not how dare you. The reply is a question about a mother and a child, and then a promise, and then a picture of a name carved on the palms of His hands.

The accusation is quoted, kept, and answered tenderly. Nobody in that passage is told off.

Your sentence is in Scripture and it was answered rather than rebuked, and saying it did not put you outside anything. That is what the word actually does with those exact words, not a leniency I am extending to you, and the Holy Spirit is the One carrying that to a man who has been careful for seven years.

What the carefulness has cost

Now the honest part, and it is not about the sentence at all.

The sentence did no damage. What has done damage is the seven years of vetting that followed it.

You've been checking everything before you say it. And a man who checks everything before he says it is not praying, he is drafting, and drafting is a completely different activity with a completely different result. It keeps you safe and it keeps you at a distance, and the distance grows about a millimetre a month and is undetectable at any given moment.

That is what the fourth year actually cost. Not the five words. The seven years of a careful man editing himself in front of God.

And nothing you said in that kitchen has changed how He regards you. Scripture keeps the accusation on the page and answers it with a name carved on a palm, and the Holy Spirit is not standing at a distance from a man who once said the true thing.

Say it again, on purpose

Here is the practical piece, and it is going to sound wrong.

Say the sentence again. Out loud. On purpose, this time, rather than by accident.

And say the old question with it, in the present tense.

The reason is not that the sentence is true. It may not be. The reason is that a thing said by accident and never repeated becomes a secret, and a secret between you and God is the one arrangement that will keep the two of you polite for the rest of your life.

You are able to say the whole of it and remain entirely inside His regard, and the whole of it includes the part you are ashamed of. Scripture quotes that accusation and answers it without one word of rebuke, and the Holy Spirit is the One who lets a careful man stop drafting.

And this article will not tell you why the years were silent. Nobody honest can. What it can tell you is what the text does with a man who says God has forgotten him, and the answer is that it hands him a picture of his own name on the palms of two hands.
